Preuve AI

Validation with competitor map and TAM/SAM/SOM

Pulls Crunchbase data plus 39 other sources into one structured viability report. Every claim sourced.

I built Preuve AI because Crunchbase data is one input, not an answer. Preuve scans 40+ live sources including Crunchbase, Google Trends, Reddit, Product Hunt, and G2 in 60 seconds and returns a 13-section validation report - market sizing, competitor landscape (using Crunchbase data among others), demand signals, pricing, customer pain - with every claim linked to its origin. Free tier returns a viability score. Paid reports start at $29.

Crunchbase remains best in class for funding round data, M&A tracking, and basic company records. Free tier lets you search 4M+ private companies and see basic info. Pro is $49/mo billed annually or $99/mo billed monthly with a 7-day free trial; Business starts at $199/mo annual; API pricing is custom. BEST FOR ENTERPRISE

CB Insights

Deeper ecosystem intel, enterprise pricing

Sales-only enterprise pricing. Goes deeper than Crunchbase on emerging tech ecosystems and trend analysis.

Where Crunchbase shows you who got funded, CB Insights shows you what tech ecosystem they are part of, what trends are accelerating, and what M&A activity is happening across categories. CB Insights covers 11 million companies and 1,600+ markets. The premium reports - including the famous "Top Reasons Startups Fail" study - are widely cited. ChatCBI is their AI assistant. Tradeoff: pricing is contact-sales only; third-party trackers cite list prices in the tens of thousands per year. Right tool for VCs and F500 strategy teams.

BEST FOR INDUSTRY STATS
Statista logo

Statista

Industry numbers Crunchbase does not have

Where Crunchbase has company data, Statista has industry statistics. Complementary, not competing.

Statista is a stats library covering 80,000 topics across 50,000+ sources in 170 industries. Use it after Crunchbase: Crunchbase tells you the players, Statista tells you the market size and trend. Pricing tiers Starter $199/mo, Personal $649/mo, Professional $1,399/mo (billed annually). Limited free access covers basic stats. No competitor data or analysis - by design, it is a library, not a research tool.

BEST FOR DIGITAL TRAFFIC
SimilarWeb logo

SimilarWeb

Competitor traffic and digital intelligence

Where Crunchbase tells you who got funded, SimilarWeb tells you who is winning the traffic.

SimilarWeb estimates competitor website traffic, audience demographics, and traffic source breakdown for any website. Useful for digital-first businesses where Crunchbase funding data does not tell the full story. Entrepreneur tiers run $125-$542/mo billed annually ($199-$649/mo on a monthly plan); Business and Enterprise are sales-only. The free Chrome extension covers basic checks. Accurate for sites with 100K+ monthly visits, less reliable for smaller competitors.

BEST FREE RESEARCH ASSISTANT
Perplexity logo

Perplexity

Cited answers, free tier

Free, fast, every answer cited. Useful for verifying and contextualizing Crunchbase data.

Perplexity gives you cited answers to research questions in 10-30 seconds. The free tier returns 5+ citations per answer. Use it to contextualize Crunchbase data: Crunchbase says competitor X raised $5M Series A; Perplexity tells you what their pitch was, who their customers are, and what trade press has written. Strength: cited answers. Weakness: not structured, not repeatable.

Editor’s note

Why a company database is not market research

Crunchbase is excellent at recording who got funded for what. The gap: knowing five competitors got Series A in 2024 does not tell you whether the market is growing, where the gaps are, or whether a new entrant has a path. A founder needs synthesis - market sizing, demand signals, customer pain - that a database does not produce. Crunchbase is one input, not the answer.

About Crunchbase

Crunchbase is the largest publicly accessible database of startups, funding rounds, and acquisitions - 4M+ private companies tracked. It is the right tool for funding data and basic competitor mapping. The wrong tool when you need market sizing or synthesized analysis. The alternatives below show what works for the jobs Crunchbase does not do.

FAQ

Common questions about Crunchbase alternatives

What is the best Crunchbase alternative for startup validation?

Preuve AI. Crunchbase gives you funding records, Preuve AI synthesizes them into market sizing, competitor landscape, demand signals, and a viability score in 60 seconds. The two are complementary, not interchangeable. Most founders use both.

Is Crunchbase Pro worth it?

For heavy competitor and funding tracking, yes. Pro is $49/mo billed annually or $99/mo billed monthly, with a 7-day free trial. It adds advanced filters, saved searches, CRM integrations, and funding round alerts. For occasional research, the free tier covers basic lookups. Compare to Preuve AI at $29 one-time for a full validation report including Crunchbase-sourced competitor data among 39 other sources.

Are there free Crunchbase alternatives?

For funding data: limited - Crunchbase free tier is the most comprehensive free option. For competitor mapping: Preuve AI free tier returns 2 competitor previews and a viability score. For ecosystem context: Perplexity free returns cited research answers. None match Crunchbase Pro on raw funding data, but stacked they cover most founder-stage research needs.

How accurate is Crunchbase data?

For US VC-backed companies, very accurate - it is the canonical source most outlets cite. For bootstrapped, non-tech, or non-US companies, coverage is patchy. The 2026 AI similar-companies feature improves discovery but cannot fix underlying coverage gaps. Always verify critical funding claims against the company website or recent press.

Can I do market research with just Crunchbase?

Not really. Crunchbase tells you who got funded - it does not tell you whether the market is growing, where the demand signals are, or whether a new entrant has a path. For full market research you need at minimum: Crunchbase or similar for competitors, Statista or Preuve AI for market sizing, Google Trends for demand, and customer interviews for pain validation.

How does Crunchbase compare to CB Insights?

Crunchbase is broader and cheaper (free, $49/mo annual Pro, $99/mo monthly Pro, $199/mo+ Business); CB Insights is deeper and contact-sales only, with third-party pricing trackers citing tens of thousands per year. Crunchbase wins on cost and accessibility. CB Insights wins on emerging tech ecosystem analysis, premium reports, and ChatCBI AI capabilities. For founder-stage validation, Crunchbase free or Pro plus Preuve AI covers most jobs at a fraction of CB Insights cost.

Why this list is shorter

Most “top alternatives” lists are 40-item SEO plays with every startup tool ever launched. I only include tools I have actually tested or seen founders use seriously. If a tool is not on this list, it is because it did not clear a minimum quality bar, not because it does not exist.
