Market and price

Everyone who could ever buy. This sets TAM.

After region, segment, size and channel filters. This sets SAM.

$

The same price for all three layers.

SOM, method A: sales capacity

Method A, sales capacity.

Closed deals, not meetings.

SOM is about 3 years, so 36.

SOM, method B: share of SAM
%

Method B. Tech companies hold 0.1% to 2% at IPO.

Bar length is logarithmic: each 20% of the width is a tenfold step down from TAM.

TAM

Total addressable market

$1.22B

SAM

Serviceable addressable market

$42.5M

3.5% of TAM

SOM

Set by sales capacity

$257K

0.6% of SAM

Sales capacity is 216 customers times your yearly price, $257K. A 2% share of SAM gives $850K. SOM keeps the smaller one: sales capacity.

No warnings. SAM is 3.5% of TAM and SOM is 0.6% of SAM, both inside the limits Preuve’s paid report checks.

Want each of these figures researched, with a cited source or an estimate label on every one? That is what the paid Preuve report does.

How to calculate TAM, SAM and SOM

  1. TAM. Count everyone who could ever buy, then multiply by your yearly price.
  2. SAM. Apply the filters you cannot change this year: region, segment, company size, channel. Multiply the buyers left by the same price.
  3. SOM. Estimate what you can win in about three years. Use the deals your team can close, and check it against a share of SAM. Keep the smaller number.

The calculator opens on a real example: a $99 a month tool for EU software firms, sized with Eurostat company counts. Replace each field with your own count and the result updates as you type.

The checks behind the warnings

  • SAM larger than TAM is an error. A slice cannot be bigger than the whole.
  • SAM above half of TAM means your filters barely narrowed the market. Add the cut that shrinks it.
  • SOM above a quarter of SAM is not a beachhead. An investor will read it as hope.
  • A TAM above $10B needs a named source, or it reads as top-down.

A calculator checks your arithmetic. It cannot check your counts. Before you size the market, find out whether the idea holds up: run a free validation scan in under a minute.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between TAM, SAM and SOM?

TAM is every buyer who could ever pay, times your yearly price. SAM is the slice you can reach today, after your region, segment, company size and channel filters. SOM is the share of SAM you can realistically win in about three years.

How does this calculator set SOM?

It runs two methods and keeps the smaller one. Sales capacity multiplies your reps, the deals each closes per month and the months you count. Share of SAM applies the percentage you expect to win. Ties go to sales capacity, because a reader can audit it.

What is a realistic ratio between TAM, SAM and SOM?

The calculator warns when SAM is more than half of TAM, because your filters barely narrowed the market. It warns again when SOM is more than a quarter of SAM, because that reads as hope rather than capacity. These are the same limits the paid Preuve report checks.

Is this a bottom-up or a top-down calculator?

Bottom-up. Every layer is a count of buyers times a price, so each number traces back to something you can source. It adds a note when TAM passes $10B, since a figure that large reads as top-down unless you name the report or count behind it.

Is the TAM SAM SOM calculator free?

Yes. It needs no signup and the math runs in your browser as you type.
