ChatGPT Dots review: a glowing teal engine on a stand beside a half-built car in a paper-craft workshop, a strong model inside an unfinished product

The short answer

ChatGPT Dots is the always-on agent OpenAI launched on September 29, 2026, running on GPT-6 Astra for ChatGPT Pro (from $100 a month) and Business Premium, but Pro subscribers in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK cannot get it yet. Pick Dots for the GPT-6 Astra model outside Europe, and Grok Bot (from $20 a month, no published region limit) for a cheaper start in Europe. Whichever agent you pay for, check that people will pay for your business first.

Key takeaways

  • For founders in Europe, Grok Bot is the practical pick today. It starts at $20 a month and has no published region limit. Dots on a Pro plan is blocked in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK, with no reason given and no date.
  • In the EEA, UK and Switzerland, the cheapest dot costs $150 a month. For a solo founder, Business Premium is the only way in there, and a Business workspace needs two seats: one Premium seat at $125 and one Standard seat at $25 on monthly billing.
  • Dots runs on a real frontier model, inside an unfinished product. GPT-6 Astra gets its own cloud computer and browser. Launch-week reports describe a failed live demo, day-one bugs and less to customize than Meta's Muse.
  • Validate the business before you pay for an agent. Dots costs $100 a month or more, Grok Bot $20 or $30, and none of them checks whether anyone will pay. CB Insights ties 43% of 385 startup failures since 2023 to poor product-market fit.

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Dots on the 29th of September 2026 as their answer to Grok Bot and Meta’s Muse. Two days after its launch, it doesn’t seem to be going very well. The service doesn’t offer much in the way of customization yet.

If you’re located in the EU, you probably can’t use the service. Even if you’re a ChatGPT Pro subscriber, you won’t be getting a dot of your own if you’re located in the European Union, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom. This is a pretty big market for a personal AI Agent product. While Grok Bot doesn’t publish a limitation on the region where you can purchase it, it is sold in the Netherlands today, per ai.nl. On the other hand, OpenAI is providing you with a much more capable model. If you’re in Europe, I’d go for Grok Bot today. If not, it might be worth a shot.

What is ChatGPT Dots?

ChatGPT Dots is a new service provided by OpenAI that was launched on the 29th of September 2026. It’s an always-on AI agent based on their GPT-6 Astra model. Each eligible ChatGPT user will get one Dot, which is an AI assistant with a cloud computer that it can use to perform tasks when you’re not chatting with it. OpenAI describes Dots on their Meet dots page as follows (article read on October 1st, 2026): “an always-on agent that keeps work moving and asks for your input when a decision needs you.”

It can be accessed in ChatGPT, by calling it, or by chatting with it in apps like Slack or Teams. Texting will be available next, per the Dots feature page. Your dot works with your apps, and can even use your computer when it’s turned on with the ChatGPT app open. You can connect many of the apps you already use with plugins (Tom’s Guide notes that there are over 4,000 of them available), so that it can perform tasks for you.

Dots uses the GPT-6 Astra model, which is a frontier model and, per OpenAI, the most aligned one it has. As Sam Altman said on stage (as quoted by Axios on the 29th of September 2026): “This is the real deal version of AI we’ve always imagined.” When your dot is researching on its own in the background, all the apps that it has connected to are read-only, so it can’t change anything without your approval.

Is ChatGPT Dots available in Europe?

Not on a personal account in most of Europe. If you’re located in the EEA, Switzerland, or the UK and you have a ChatGPT Pro account, you can’t get a dot for yourself as of the 1st of October 2026. If you have a ChatGPT Business Premium or Enterprise workspace in one of these regions, you will be able to once it rolls out to you. According to the page describing where dots are available (page read on the 1st of October 2026):

"Pro 100, Pro 200, and Pro 500: For users over 18 outside the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, and Switzerland."

The European Economic Area is composed of the 27 European Union countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. If you have a Pro subscription in any of those countries, Switzerland, or the UK, you won’t be getting a dot of your own. OpenAI didn’t explain why, nor did they say when they would be rolling out Dots to Pro users there. A user shared a note from OpenAI on the r/codex subreddit, under the title “No dots for EEA users for now”.

OpenAI’s access page also states that workspaces on ChatGPT Business Premium in Europe will be able to get Dots. As a user noted on the r/OpenAI subreddit on the 29th of September:

"So then… I'm paying the same as other countries for… less??" (r/OpenAI)

In addition to not giving Pro users in most of Europe a dot, OpenAI also reduced the usage allowance for new subscribers of the Pro 200 plan on the same day. If you already had a Pro 200 plan, your usage limit will be the same until the 29th of October 2026, after which it will go down (according to the OpenAI Help Center, page read on the 1st of October 2026). As a user on the r/ChatGPT subreddit put it, that’s a downgrade from 20x to 10x, without any additional benefits.

Why is the Dots launch getting a rough reception?

First of all, the launch happened one day after OpenAI said they weren’t releasing a new model yet because it wasn’t safe enough, as the AP reported. Axios then wrote on the 30th of September that the launch of Dots was putting OpenAI’s promises on AI safety to the test. OpenAI added some safety measures by default, such as asking you for permission before sending a message or handing certain money transactions back to you.

Secondly, the demo of Dots didn’t go very well. During the live stream, an OpenAI staffer tried to call her dot, but the dot lagged, as Axios noted. As Nate Herk put it in his side-by-side review, it “just wasn’t responding”, and the live stream muted it. A viewer in the r/codex thread wrote: “This product is failing all of her requests.”

Most customization is cosmetic: name, shape, color, eyes, glasses, and accessories. Some users already think it should go further, for example this user in the OpenAI Developer Community (Sep. 30):

"They kindof look like they were vibe coded using Codex from 4 months ago." (OpenAI Developer Community)

The domain dot.com is owned by SpaceXAI and redirects to a page where you can download Grok, per TechCrunch. It’s only been two days, and many of these kinks will likely be ironed out soon. (But I’m not sure about the block for Europe; OpenAI has not said how long it will last.)

What did testers find after a day with Dots?

In this video from Sep. 30, 2026, Nate Herk compares his experience of using Dots for a day and also Meta’s Muse for a day. His initial impression: Dots feels very rushed, like something they needed to put together to catch up to Muse. He was expecting something like Grok Bot, with a team of bots you can work with. But it is one agent, and you talk to it, just like Muse.

What he liked about Dots:

  • He was able to get to Slack in like three clicks, and now his team can message his dot in a Slack channel.
  • He can also call his dot, and the delay in the voice isn’t bad at all.
  • It starts off with your ChatGPT memory and it integrates with the coding app from OpenAI. (He notes that the ChatGPT memory it starts with is old. So he pointed it at some of his own files.)

What he did not like:

  • It doesn’t seem like you can manage your tasks, for example ones you have scheduled, from within Dots. You have to do it from another part of the app.
  • He kept getting incorrect information on how to do certain things within Dots. “Dot doesn’t even know how it works,” he says. If it doesn’t know how it works, why should he trust it for other things?
  • It started to do coding-related tasks outside the project where they should be done.
  • On the first day, he wasn’t able to get it on his phone and the desktop app wasn’t working either. So he made a joke on X: Dots “should have been called bugs.” But the next day things seemed to work better.

As for personalization, both let you give your agent a name and dress up its avatar. Muse has an Identity tab, where you can edit its memory and persona in files. With Dots, the memory is more hidden. In a short post on GitHub (titled “I tried OpenAI Dots. It feels undercooked.”), a developer who tried all three agents wrote that changing the picture and personality is delightful and fluid in Grok Bot, but clunky and done the old way in Dot. His verdict: “The UX needs a lot of work...”

In this post on r/codex (first day of use), a user writes that even simple things like adding a note take five minutes or more. But Dots, like the other agents, is meant to work for you while you do something else. It is still annoying that it is getting things wrong. You should double check everything. After all, it did not even get its own setup right.

Nate Herk says he would choose Dots, because he is already using coding tools like the one from OpenAI. He thinks the model is much better for coding and automations. For a non-technical user, he would recommend Muse for its interface.

ChatGPT Dots vs Grok Bot: which one should you build a business with?

In short: Dots has a better model; Grok Bot is much cheaper, with no published region limit. On the LMArena agent leaderboard (as of Oct. 1, 2026), GPT-6 Astra (used in Dots) is at #3; Muse’s Spark 1.3 at #13; Grok 4.7 (SpaceXAI’s best model there) at #17. The difference between Astra and the others is significant (beyond the error margins). The difference between Muse and Grok is not (they overlap). They all do the same thing: they each give your agent a computer in the cloud and can connect to your tools. It comes down to price, your location, and (for Grok Bot) the number of agents you want. I am including Meta’s Muse in the table below, because most of the launch coverage mentioned it.

If you are outside Europe, I would go for Dots to get access to GPT-6 Astra. (By the way, the Meet dots page says that for the first month after launch, you get extended limits.) In Europe, I would go for Grok Bot. It is 5 times cheaper than the cheapest Pro plan, and you get a small team of Bots instead of just one. As ai.nl wrote on Sep. 14, 2026, it is “the most accessible paid option” for Dutch businesses. Here is how you can (and cannot) use Grok Bot for your business.

Nate Herk expects they will end up quite similar: the main differences will be the apps they connect to, the model they are based on and the price. I agree. For me, the price and the region are the key differences.

If you are in Europe, what works today?

Grok Bot, if you opt for any paid Cursor or SuperGrok plan. Dots, but in the EEA, UK and Switzerland you need a ChatGPT Business workspace with a Premium seat. Not Muse: it is only available in the US and Canada right now, per TechCrunch (Sept 25, 2026).

A ChatGPT Business workspace requires at least two seats. You can mix types of seats (source: OpenAI billing page, read Oct 1, 2026). If you are a solo founder and live in France, Germany, the UK, etc., the cheapest way to access a dot is to buy one Premium seat and one Standard seat: either $150/month or $120/month if you commit for 1 year.

Caution: Dots are rolling out, so you might not get a Dot immediately with a Premium seat. Do not commit for 1 year before checking!

Map of Europe showing ChatGPT Dots blocked on the Pro plan, open through a two-seat Business workspace, and Grok Bot open
In the EEA, UK and Switzerland the door to Dots is a two-seat Business workspace, not the Pro plan you may already pay for.

When is ChatGPT Dots the right call, and when is it not?

Opt for ChatGPT Dots if:

You already have a ChatGPT Pro account (Dots on Pro is not available in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK). You already work with Slack, Teams, Gmail, Google Drive, etc. You code (Dots uses GPT-6 Astra for coding and automations). You are ok with a single agent that is not perfect yet.

Opt for Grok Bot if:

You live in Europe. You want to start with a cheap plan ($20/month or $30/month) and several Bots. Caution: be mindful of the weekly limits of the plan you choose. I gathered users’ feedback on the limits here.

Opt for Muse if:

You live in the US or Canada. You do not code. Nate Herk says the free tier allows up to 100M tokens per week, and he recommends Muse to non-tech people because the interface is easier to work with.

Why validate your business idea before paying for Dots, Grok Bot or Muse?

None of the three AI agents will tell you whether your business idea has a chance to work or not. Yet, you are about to spend a lot of money (starting at $100/month with Dots, $20-30/month with Grok Bot and free + paid tiers with Muse, per Axios) on agents that will run your business for you.

OpenAI gives examples of what Dots can do on its page: update a sales proposal, prepare content based on an interview, fix bugs based on customer feedback, etc. These are all good if you already have customers.

Yet, if you do not check whether your business idea has a chance to work first, you risk failing. 43% of 385 startups that failed since 2023 cited poor product-market fit (source: CB Insights). AI agents will accelerate your failure if you do not check first, at a cost of up to several hundred dollars per month. Read more on why startups fail.

Check the demand, your market, your competitors, etc. first. Then choose your AI agent. Preuve can check the 3 above for you (based on 60+ live data sources). Your free Reality Check takes less than a minute. You still need to talk to 5 potential buyers, of course. The 5 steps to take are explained in my guide on how to start a business with Grok Bot. And if you are a ChatGPT user, here is how to validate your startup idea with ChatGPT.

A founder facing three always-on AI agents ready to work, with an empty card asking who pays
Whichever agent you pick, none of them asks who is going to pay; that question stays with you.

Once the above is done, you can choose the AI agent that works best for you. In that order. The agent is not a risk. A bad business idea is.

FAQ

Is ChatGPT Dots available in Europe?

In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, only on Business Premium and Enterprise. OpenAI's access page, read October 1, 2026, lists Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 for users over 18 outside the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. Business Premium and Enterprise are rolling out worldwide, Europe included, and Enterprise needs an admin to switch Dots on. OpenAI has not given a reason or a date for Pro users in those countries.

ChatGPT Dots vs Grok Bot: which is better for a business?

Dots runs on GPT-6 Astra, a frontier model, and connects to Slack and Teams, but it gives you one dot per user at launch and starts at $100 a month on Pro. Grok Bot starts at $20 a month with Cursor Pro or $30 with SuperGrok, lets you run several named Bots, and has no published region limit. Outside Europe, pick Dots for the model. In Europe, Grok Bot is the cheaper way in.

How do I get ChatGPT Dots?

Outside the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, subscribe to ChatGPT Pro 100, Pro 200 or Pro 500 and your dot is included. In those regions, Pro does not include one, so you need a ChatGPT Business workspace with a Premium seat (two seats minimum, from $150 a month) or an Enterprise plan where an admin switches Dots on. Plus, Go and Free do not include a dot, per OpenAI's access page read October 1, 2026.

How much does ChatGPT Dots cost?

Dots has no price of its own. Your first dot comes with ChatGPT Pro 100 ($100 a month), Pro 200 ($200) or Pro 500 ($500), or a Business Premium seat ($125 a month, or $100 a month billed annually, with a two-seat minimum per workspace). Plus, Go and Free plans do not include a dot. Conversations with your dot do not count toward ChatGPT usage limits, but tasks it starts in OpenAI's coding app or ChatGPT Work do.

Is ChatGPT Dots the same as the three dots menu in ChatGPT?

No. The three dots icon is the menu next to a chat in ChatGPT. Dots (one per user is "your dot") is the always-on agent OpenAI launched on September 29, 2026.

Can ChatGPT Dots run a business for you?

It can keep jobs moving in a business you already have, such as updating a proposal, preparing content from an interview or following up on customer feedback, and it asks before it sends a message or places an order. It does not tell you whether anyone will pay for the business. Check demand, market and competitors before you pay for any agent: Preuve AI scans 60+ live data sources for that, with a free Reality Check in under a minute.
