The short answer

Hermes Agent is worth setting up in 2026 if you want an always-on assistant for scheduled work such as a morning brief or a weekly report, and can spend some evenings tuning it. Pick Claude Code or Codex for coding, and a ready-made app like Meta Muse if you do not want to run a server. The software is free and MIT licensed; budget roughly $17 to $30 a month on a cheap model, and about $251 a month on Claude Sonnet 5.5 for the same heavy use.

Key takeaways

  • Hermes Agent earns its keep on background work, not coding. It runs scheduled briefings, inbox triage and weekly reports, and answers from Telegram, Slack or WhatsApp. Users in r/hermesagent send website and code work to Claude Code or Codex instead.
  • Model fees swing 20 times over with the model you pick. Hermes Cloud Medium costs $16.80 for a 30-day month if it runs nonstop, billed per second of uptime. One measured heavy-chat pattern adds about $12 a month in input-token fees on GPT-6 Luna, or about $234 on Claude Sonnet 5.5, before output tokens.
  • One user thread centers on $20 a month, as reported. In one r/hermesagent spend thread, 18 of 24 answers that named a monthly figure were at $30 or less. Five paid nothing extra, using local models, free endpoints or a plan they already had.
  • Safety depends on how you install it. Nous Research says the operating system is the only real security boundary, and by default commands run on your own machine. Run it on a separate computer and set an allowlist for every chat app you connect.
  • Check for buyers before the agent bill starts. A year of Hermes Cloud Medium on a cheap model comes to about $342 in the worked example. Nothing in the agent checks whether anyone will pay for the business it runs.

How much does Hermes Agent cost? Besides the download, which is free, the answer to this Hermes Agent review is the middle one in this Reddit thread about how much people pay for Hermes each month (around $20). The software is free, but most of the models you can plug in cost money.

This review is biased since I sell a tool to help you validate your startup ideas (Preuve AI), but I relied on the Nous Research pages and github to write it. More links to other useful Reddit threads and reviews at the end.

What is Hermes Agent, and what’s special about it?

Hermes Agent is an open-source AI agent that can be self-hosted on your own computer or server, and interacted with via a variety of apps, including Telegram, Discord, Slack, Whatsapp, Signal, and your terminal. As an open-source project hosted on github, it has evolved quickly since its inception on July 22nd 2025. The repository is now on version v0.21.5, released on September 24th 2026, the fifth release that month.

Hermes Agent, according to the project’s README file, is unique in that it is the only agent that features a learning loop that allows it to write and improve its own skills over time. It can also search your past conversations with it and save short notes about you to learn about you over time. It can run on a variety of models, including Nous Research’s Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI, and your own server-side model, and you can swap between them with a single command. Note that the Hermes 4 models are not recommended for use on Hermes Agent, as they are optimised for chat and reasoning rather than actions.

It stores at least part of its memory in text files, which are read at the beginning of every session.

They run their agent on a $50 Raspberry Pi 4, and report that no update broke anything in 90 days.

What can Hermes Agent help founders automate?

The agent is really good for repetitive and scheduled tasks. In the Readme it has a section on how to program the agent for things like daily reports, nightly backups, weekly audits, etc. The beauty of it all is you can do all of this with simple language, in your preferred chat app. Some examples of how people are using their agent in r/hermesagent, include getting a daily news digest, getting weekly reports on how their site is ranking for certain search terms (sent to a dedicated Telegram group), getting weekly messages about local events from their favourite newsletters, and filtering their email inbox.

Things I would use it for in my small business:

  • Getting a list of new competitor pages, mentions, and emails each morning
  • Generating a weekly report of analytics and sending it to Slack
  • Generating content (posts, emails, etc.) for me to approve
  • Researching things on my phone while I’m out

Things I wouldn’t use it for:

How much does Hermes Agent cost?

In a post on the Hermes agent subreddit, 18/24 of users state they spend $30 or less per month running the agent. The cost can be broken up into 3 parts:

The cost of hosting the agent is fairly minimal. You can run the agent on your own machine or rent a server. According to Nous, you can rent a cheap $5 vps to run the agent on. Alternatively, you can use Nous’s own “Hermes Cloud.” As of October 4th, 2026, the “Medium” instance will cost you $0.56 per day (while the agent is running) and will be billed daily against your nous credit. Inference and tool usage will be billed separately.

Hermes Cloud Medium$0.56/day running, $0.03/day stopped10 sessions at once, 2 GB memory, 4 virtual processors
Hermes Cloud Large$1.09/day running, $0.03/day stopped20 sessions at once, 4 GB memory, 8 virtual processors

The model provider will charge you based on the number of tokens used by the model. Based on this Github issue (#4379) from April 2026, Hermes V0.6.0 sends ~13,900 tokens of “fixed” data for every request made to the model. This represents 73% of an average request to the model.

In the same Github issue, the same user mentions they used ~3.9m input tokens chatting with Hermes in an evening through Telegram and WhatsApp. Over a 30 day period, this equates to 117m input tokens per month. Based on the current list prices of GPT-6 Luna (a cheap model) and Claude Sonnet 5.5 (a powerful model) as of October 4th 2026, this equates to the following (including hosting fees):

SetupHosting / monthModel input / monthTotal / month, input only
Own machine, local model$0 (hardware you own)$0 plus electricityAbout $0
$5 rented server, GPT-6 Luna$5117 × $0.10 = $11.70$16.70
Hermes Cloud Medium, GPT-6 Luna30 × $0.56 = $16.80 if always on$11.70$28.50
Hermes Cloud Medium, Claude Sonnet 5.5$16.80117 × $2 = $234$250.80

Source: GitHub issue #4379 for tokens, OpenAI and Anthropic list prices, read October 4, 2026.

This cost is based on the list prices of the models. The actual cost you pay will differ based on how much of the request is discounted due to caching and how many output tokens are sent back by the model. Newer versions of Hermes may also require less tokens than the version referenced in the Github issue.

Hermes Agent cost: a founder at a kitchen table comparing three bills, a small server receipt, a long model invoice and a calendar of evenings spent tuning
The server is the receipt you notice, the model is the one that grows, and your evenings never get an invoice at all.

Based on the r/hermesagent Reddit post linked above, it seems like people are on the low end of the cost spectrum. The OP of the post, who is on the $20/mo “Plus” plan, mentions they expect to spend an additional $20-$30/mo based on their usage, for a total of $40-$50/mo. They mention this seems like a lot for personal automation.

18/24 of users state they spend $30 or less. In a related post on r/hermesagent asking if Hermes is better than Codex or Claude Code, one user mentions Hermes burns through tokens like crazy unless you trim it down. A few of the users who mentioned spending $20/mo were subscribing to AI models, so this may be used for other things besides Hermes.

Finally, you also have to factor in how much time it will take you to set up the agent. In a post on r/hermesagent from September 29th, 2026, a non-developer who wanted to set up 6 agents for their agency said it had been almost 2 weeks of work and they were not there yet to start producing. That was six agents, but I’d still budget a few evenings for one before it’s actually useful.

As of October 4th, 2026, Hermes only has 3 reviews on Trustpilot, with a TrustScore of 3.2.

Is Hermes Agent safe to use?

Hermes is only as safe as the machine you’re running it on. From the security policy, your operating system is the only thing between an adversarial LLM and your user account. While Hermes has many safety mechanisms (approvals, filters, etc.) to protect against honest mistakes, they will not protect you if the LLM wishes to attack you. Hermes will run commands on your host machine by default, and has access to your model API keys.

In terms of security, there’s a few things to keep in mind, when connecting to a chat app it’ll use an allowlist of users by default, and if there isn’t one, it won’t work unless you approve a pairing code, the one that confused a user is whatsapp, when setting it up, you can tell it to allow everyone who has whatsapp to be able to talk to your agent, unless you want everyone to be able to talk to your agent via whatsapp don’t do that, also if you do add someone to the allowlist keep in mind your agent will treat everyone on the allowlist the same, so if you have an agent with access to something like your keys, don’t add other people to it.

Also be careful what you download, again from the security policy, because all skills are able to run arbitrary python code the moment they are imported, you should not install skills you do not trust. There are sites that look similar to where you’re supposed to install hermes, someone on r/hermesagent downloaded and ran the installer from what they thought was the official site, the agent’s actual website is hermes-agent.nousresearch.com, the repo can be found here on github NousResearch/hermes-agent.

Some ways to set up your agent that users have mentioned:

  • Use a different machine (or container) to run it on, rather than your work computer. One user on r/hermesagent mentioned they use a Mac Mini dedicated to the agent; they’re logged into their account as a basic user, and have an email inbox set up that can read email but not send it.
  • If you’re using chat apps, set your allowlist to only include accounts you own.
  • If you’re using WhatsApp, use a second phone number, not your personal one.
  • Read the code for skills before installing them.
Is Hermes Agent safe: a messenger robot behind a door with a short guest list, while the house key ring stays locked in a separate room
The allowlist decides who gets to talk to the agent; only a separate machine decides what the agent can touch.

Is Hermes Agent better than OpenClaw?

Users seem to like Hermes Agent more, simply because it’s more stable. OpenClaw has some nice advantages, like native phone apps, but both are free, MIT licensed, use the same skill format, and list 20+ chat apps, etc. Both ran fine in the side-by-side test by Firecrawl (June 3, 2026), but if I were a founder using an agent for the first time, I’d probably go with Hermes Agent because they seem more consistent with updates. This is a little silly since this is reddit and the testing is extremely lean, but here goes.

The only reason I see for using OpenClaw is if you want its native phone apps (check the README). The biggest complaint seems to be around updates. In a thread on r/openclaw asking if Hermes is all hype, one user said every time they update OpenClaw, something is broken and it takes a while to find out what’s wrong, and another said the Hermes talk is astroturfing and 95% of the reviews are bots. Hermes does have a command to import your OpenClaw setup, but one user mentioned it was easier to start from scratch.

Hermes Agent vs Claude Code and Codex: what users say

How does it compare, say, to Claude Code or Codex? From what I can tell, people generally say it’s not for coding.

You can use both. In fact, Hermes can use Claude Code or Codex, and some users have set it up that way. Use Hermes to have a schedule, remember things, use chat apps, etc. while also using one of the others for coding.

People have complained about it not being as polished as some of the other things. Like in this thread from Sept 2026, one person notes that it doesn’t yet have a native mobile experience like the others, and another (from r/hermesagent) expresses discomfort with the self-improvement aspect because it leads to extra model calls and hidden state (and thus hidden cost and behavior). On Trustpilot as of Aug 24 2026, one person notes that it may not be as intuitive of an interface as other things (grokbot, using claude/codex directly), but the value is amazing.

It’s a classic trade-off: free tool, but rough edges on the interface.

Who should skip Hermes Agent, and who should run it?

If you want a sleek, ready-to-use agent, check out my reviews on Meta Muse, ChatGPT Dots, and Grok Bot. Don’t run Hermes Agent if you’re not technical. It expects you to be okay with managing a server. Don’t run Hermes Agent if you’re primarily a coder. It’s not built for that. Don’t run Hermes Agent if you’re looking for a side hustle in a box. It won’t magically find you a business.

Do run Hermes Agent if you’re technical and time-poor. If you’re comfortable with the terminal and have repetitive tasks, it’s a no-brainer. Example: a weekly briefing on competitors and your inbox. Set it to email you the report every Monday morning using a cheap model. If, after two weeks of tweaking, it’s still getting it wrong, scrap it. If it works, you’ve got a skill (and all the agent’s notes) that you can take elsewhere, since its skills and notes are saved in files. And it’s cheap. Based on the discussion in this Reddit thread, I’d estimate $20/month as a mid-range cost.

Why check that your business has buyers before you set up Hermes?

The examples in the Hermes Agent readme all assume you have an existing business to apply it to. And if the agent’s optimising itself, it’ll just optimise a business that nobody wants.

Let’s take the example above. If you were using the managed option, it’d cost you 12 * $28.50 = $342 per year (using Hermes Cloud Medium and GPT-6 Luna, excluding output tokens). That’s cheap if you have a business, but not if you’re just testing an idea. I wrote a post about why startups fail.

Hermes Agent can run recurring jobs, but it can’t do the thing Preuve does: check if your idea is any good. Preuve scans 60+ live data sources to find real-world data about your idea (is there demand, any competitors, etc.). You can try a Reality Check for free in under a minute. If you do have a good idea, check out my post on how to validate a business idea, or learn more on my idea validation hub. It’s worth doing this before you start playing with Hermes Agent, because it can take a while to get it running.

FAQ

Is Hermes Agent free?

Yes. Hermes Agent is open source under the MIT license, and you can install it at no cost with a one-line command from hermes-agent.nousresearch.com on Linux, macOS, WSL2 or native Windows PowerShell, per the NousResearch/hermes-agent README. You pay for what it runs on and the AI model it uses. Nous Portal has a free plan limited to free models, and paid plans at $20, $100 and $200 a month that include $22, $110 and $220 of monthly credits (Nous Research, read October 4, 2026). Running a local model on your own hardware can bring the model bill to $0.

How much does Hermes Agent cost per month?

In one r/hermesagent thread read on October 4, 2026, 18 of the 24 answers naming a monthly figure were $30 or less, and the middle one was about $20 as reported. Hosting is the fixed part: Hermes Cloud Medium costs $0.56 a day while running, or $16.80 for 30 days of nonstop uptime, with model fees billed on top. The model is the part that swings: the same usage pattern measured in a GitHub issue costs about $12 a month in input tokens on GPT-6 Luna and about $234 on Claude Sonnet 5.5, before output tokens and caching discounts.

Is Hermes Agent safe?

It can be, if you set it up with care. Nous Research’s own security policy says the operating system is the only real boundary, and the default setup runs commands directly on your machine. Run it on a separate computer or inside a container, set an allowlist with only your own accounts for every chat app you connect, read the code of any skill before installing it, and install only from hermes-agent.nousresearch.com or the official GitHub repository.

Is Hermes Agent better than OpenClaw?

For stability and self-learning, many users say yes: several r/openclaw and r/hermesagent users report OpenClaw updates breaking their setup while Hermes kept running. OpenClaw adds native phone apps and a public skill registry, ClawHub, while both list 20+ chat apps. Some r/openclaw users also say pro-Hermes comments are astroturfing, so weigh praise threads with care. Both are MIT licensed and free.

Hermes Agent vs Claude Code or Codex: which should I use?

Use Claude Code or Codex for building websites and writing code; r/hermesagent users say those tools are tuned for code projects out of the box. Use Hermes Agent for an assistant that runs on a schedule, remembers your preferences and answers from your chat apps. Hermes can hand coding work to Claude Code or Codex, so many users run both.

What is the difference between Hermes and Hermes Agent?

Hermes Agent is Nous Research’s open-source AI agent, the product reviewed here. Hermes on its own usually means Nous Research’s family of open-weight AI models, such as Hermes 4 (technical report published August 2025). Neither is related to Hermès, the French fashion house.
